General description of the collection: The Dorothy K. Mitchum Papers contains letters, official orders, personnel material, and printed materials from Mitchum's service in the United States (U.S.) Army Nurse Corps during World War II (WWII), 15 September 1939 to 1946. The collection includes programs, training materials, news clippings, poems, a blood donor's card, officer's club membership cards, and pamphlets on returning to civilian life. Editions of two newsletters, "Rollin' Home" and "Tyrone-Waring Canteen News", a 23 September 1943 edition of the "Villager-Greenwich Village" from New York City, and a newspaper print, "Adolf Hitler's own Book, Mein Kampf, 'My Battle' " are also included. There is also a annotated Nurse Edition New Testament and an Active Service Edition of the Gospel of St. John printed by the Naval and Military Bible Society, London.

Dorothy K. Mitchum was accepted as a Private Nurse Registrant in affiliation with the Nursing Bureau of Manhattan and Bronx, Inc. in 1942. She enrolled in the Red Cross Nursing Service, 10 June 1943. She entered into the Army 15 October 1943 and was a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during WWII in the European Theatre of Operation with the 22nd and the 121st General Hospital.
